Location

Carlton is located about 20 minutes southwest of downtown Duluth via I-35 S and MN-45. With a total area of 2.27 square miles, Carlton’s population measured 862 at the 2010 census. Don’t miss the annual Carlton Daze celebration held in late July.

History

In 1870, the Northern Pacific Railroad decided to finish a stretch of track that would link Duluth to St. Paul. Temporary shacks were erected for the workmen at the place that was soon known as "Northern Pacific Junction". In 1881, this settlement was incorporated as Carlton, taking its name from former State Senator Reuben Carlton.

School District

South Terrace Elementary is located at 530 Stine Drive, Carlton, MN 55718-0620 and caters to Preschool through 5th grade students.

Carlton High School is located at 405 School Avenue, Carlton, MN 55718-0310 and houses the middle and high school grades, 6 through 12.

Things to Do

Jay Cooke State Park

Only a short drive off of the interstate, Jay Cooke State Park offers a wide variety of activities for backpackers, hikers, bikers (both mountain and tour), horseback riders and skiers. Park trails link up to the Willard Munger State Trail at the north edge of the park.

Go during the spring to see the wildflowers or enjoy the vivid colors of the fall. Take a walk on the swinging suspension bridge high above the raging St. Louis River or visit the historic cemetery and gorge at Thomson Dam.

Plan to stay at one of the very well-maintained camping sites or if sleeping indoors is more your style, check out the Oldenburg House Inn, a Carlton bed and breakfast listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
