Duluth Area Lakes

by JS Realty

J.S. Realty is a rural residential based company that is very familiar with not only owning lake shore property, but buying it too.  In the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, in the Duluth area, there are several spectacular lakes.   Each lake is unique and attractive in their own way and have some interesting facts about them.

Lake Superior  . It is the largest freshwater lake in the world.  Lake Superior is so large that it can hold the other 4 Great Lakes as well as 3 additional lakes that are the size of Lake Erie.   There are 31,280 square surface miles in Lake Superior.  The deepest point in the lake is 1,333 feet. Real Estate wise, there is a high appeal of Lake Superior because of the stunning views and the unique facts about the lake.  In addition there are many recreational uses for the lake.  Sail boating, kayaking, fishing, and watching ships go into the harbor are just some of the many things that you can do on Lake Superior.  JS Realty sells lake properties on Lake Superior from the Duluth area up to Two Harbors.  In the Duluth Area Association of Realtors for the year of 2014, there were 28 homes that were sold that had waterfront on Lake Superior.  The average sold price for these properties was $427,607.

Fish Lake Reservoir is often just referred to as Fish Lake.  The lake is 3,071 acres and is located about 13 miles northwest of Duluth.  Something that is unique about this lake is that Minnesota Power owns and utilizes a dam that provides hydroelectricity used for providing consumers electricity.  They also own and operates a public access located at the dam.  Another interesting thing about Fish Lake is that land in that area is either privately owned or leased by Minnesota Power.  If you purchase a home or cabin with leased land there are a couple things that you need to know, first the leases can be up to 30 years, there are options to extend the term, and to sell and to transfer the property.   These leases are in place so that people can own lake property, but the environment is still protected.

Island Lake is an 8,000 acre reservoir that has almost 50 islands throughout the lake.  This lake is the largest inland lake in the Duluth area and the most well-known.  Similar to Fish Lake, it also has properties that are privately owned or leased by Minnesota Power.  Island Lake is located about 16 miles north of Duluth by taking Rice Lake Rd.  In the Duluth Area Association of Realtors for the year of 2014, there were 19 homes that were sold that had waterfront on Island Lake.  The average sold price for these properties was $263,705.

Grand Lake  is about 14 miles northwest of Duluth.  The lake system is made up of 3 different lakes.  Big Grand Lake, is a 1,592 acre lake with 2 public landings.  Little Grand Lake, is a 147 acre lake with no public access.  Baby Grand Lake, a 65 acre lake about 10 ft deep.  There is a channel that connects all three lakes.  In the Duluth Area Association of Realtors for the year of 2014, 2 homes were sold that had waterfront on one of the 3 lakes.  The average sold price for these properties was $302,850.

Pike Lake is about 10 miles north of Duluth.  It is a 494 acre lake that is 62 feet deep.  There is a lovely beach and golf course located on Pike Lake that adds to the many entertainment options that lake living has to offer.  Pike Lake is the only “rural lake” in the Duluth area that has city sewer.  In the Duluth Area Association of Realtors for the year of 2014, there were 5 homes that were sold that had waterfront on Pike Lake.  The average sold price for these properties was $449,180.
